So we all go through fazes in our lives, I know I went through an Vampire Hunter D phase and an Gunm phase. Most certainly a Devilman phase and a short Genocyber phase. Honestly though all Otaku’ness aside Girls with guns is a great phase. One I feel all lovers of anime should enjoy. Gunsmith Cats is synonymous with that genre. Sure Tokyo Police was more graphic, Burn Up is flashier and Dirty Pair is sexier. However all those aside Gunsmith Cats is what it can all live up to.  Based on the aggressively provocative (in a guns blazing engines roaring kind of way) Manga by Kenichi Sonoda. These episodes run through quick with a refreshing pace that keeps the story going and the action kinetic

Rally Vincent is a gunsmith. A collector of fine weapons and an attractive young woman. She drives a Shelby GT 500 with confidence and grace. She is a perfect marksman, with an intriguing lucky shot. May Hopkins is a quite mousy lil’ girl with a pension for C-4 and using way to much of it to do just about anything protect the house from robbers, fix a tail, open doors and turn BMWs into convertibles. Together with their secretary Becky and the ATF weasel Jonathan “Ness” Washington these girls ravage anything that gets in their path with guns a blazing and wide rims screeching on the pavement.. Up against a Russian Hit woman and the seedy government underbelly of the Greater Chicago Area the twists in this plot just keep going.

This movie shines foremost with the realism in the weapons and the car. In many scenes you can see how one grenade was drawn just as carefully as entire groups of bad guys were drawn. The detail to Red Wing that rally uses is startling right down to the highlighting in the safety. On the Shelby you can see the welding on the speed hinges on the hood. Not only are the details to the mechanics uncanny for this style of anime but the scenery in which this story takes place is fantastic. It takes place in Chicago obviously due to one of the nice classic skyline shots. However I have worked in the real ATF, FEMA, DEA and GSA office that they pull up at in one scene it’s right off Adams, just 2 blocks away is another road that occurs in the movie, Lakeshore. I don’t really know how accurately most anime movies that portray real areas that exist get to realism but GunsmithCats sets a precedent.

The plot has it’s twists and turns and really keeps you wanting more what is a real shame is that other than the manga there isn’t any.  The music is good, bouncy and funky at times but still good. Animation is sharp and clean with the emphasis on movement rather than clarity. The main detail is paid to the weapons and the car rather than emotion. In a number of scenes Rally and May go super deformed for a second just so they can show there Kawaii nature for a second. One thing I was wondering in the progress of the series Rally kills about 30 people but she is still too shy to stand around in front of the cop in a sports bra and panties?
Rally has a sick Luck Shot it really follows the 16th
Law of Inverse Accuracy that states, “The accuracy of a 'Good Guy' when operating any form of fire-arm increases as the difficulty of the shot increases. The accuracy of the 'Bad Guys' when operating fire-arms decreases when the difficulty of the shot decreases. (Also known as the Stormtrooper Effect) Example: A 'Good Guy' in a drunken stupor being held upside down from a moving vehicle will always hit, and several battalions of 'Bad Guys' firing on a 'Good Guy' standing alone in the middle of an open field will always miss.” The law goes on to say “Whenever a 'Good Guy' is faced with insurmountable odds, the 'Bad Guys' line up in neat rows, allowing the hero to take them all out with a single burst of automatic fire and then escape” So very well demonstrated in this movie.  In addition to the Girls being very lucky  when Rally does gets injured it always seems like you get a gratuitous bandaged up lil’ girl shot. Is this a link to the Bandaged Girl Fetish that we got a taste of in Eva (remember the Asuka\Shinju sticky fist episode?) Honestly though this anime manages to amaze even without too much of rally or may revealing their “guns”

This one is a sure favourite if you like the Dirty Harry style cop movies. Guns Guts Babes and Blood. Not the most graphic movie as far as violence goes but still graphic enough to be entertaining and cute enough for you to not notice the dead piling up. See this movie, Buy it from AnotherUniverse.  Okay now that’s not really the end of the article. There is more Gunsmith Cats matters to be discussed. Who is this RoadBuster or Riding Bean character.  For those of you  that don’t know.  Another creation of Sonoda that seems uncannily familiar.  He has lots of guns and He drives a very fast supped up car In Chicago no less. He has serious trouble with cops and always wins his battle? If not really a realistic portrayal of anything but it does have some serious similarities to it. I am uncovering a massive conspiracy here, Riding Bean is just the story of the delusional ATF Agent. Now to cover this up Kenichi Sonoda put riding bean in the Gusmith Cats manga (Rally is even out to get Bean in one issue). I see through it! The ATF agent is so depressed at always having Rally making fun of him and really wanting to be the Elliott Ness that he is not,  so he daydreams about being a Big Baddie with a fast car instead of a undercover blue pinto. Sodona is turning a profit on Anime characters daydreams when will the oppression of graphic art be ceased!

Woah! I really needed to get that rant off my chest. Check out Gunsmith Cats today and we will keep you posted as to when AnotherUniverse plans on putting RidingBean on our shelves.
