The Free Planets Alliance faces off against the Galactic Empire in a richly woven saga of human dreams, passions, triumph, and tragedy. Originally part of the Galactic Empire the Free Planets Alliance was formed when political refugees fled to the world of Heinessen and established the Free Planets Alliance. Politically the Galactic Empire is reminiscient of medieval Europe. Nobles rule holdings much like slave owners ran their plantations with undisputed, complete authority and accountability only to the head of state, the kaiser himself. Widespread corruption and a general sense of helplessness prevail among the Empire's populace. Many, including the Kaiser himself, believe The Goldenbaum Dynasty is...
nearing the end of its reign. The situation with the Free Planets Alliance is equally unstable. 150 years of war with the Empire has weakened the principles upon which the Alliance was founded - democracy and personal freedoms are being squeezed by propaganda machines and strongarm tactics from politicians pushing their own agendas. The Free Planets Alliance and the Galactic Empire are both sitting on powder kegs waiting to go off. Change, reform, and revolution are in the winds. Into this backdrop the two central characters of this drama are thrust. Yang Wen Li, Miracle Yang to some, the Hero of El Facil to others, is the Alliance's savior. Tactically he is peerless. Yang flies circles around his opponents and makes them look silly while doing so. As a historian and idealist Yang is a great believer in democracy and in his decision making process the greater good of humanity is foremost in his mind. In space Miracle Yang may be a high flier on an Admiral's seat but on the ground Yang is about as flat and socially inept as you can get. As the series progresses Yang becomes the focal point of the story, he the single largest obstacle to Reinhard von Lohengram's dream of uniting humanity and the last bastion of democracy. Lohengram is first introduced as the Empire's youngest High Admiral. Brilliant, ambitious, and ruthless Reinhard von Lohengram is a dangerous man to have as an enemy. Despite his youth Reinhard is the Empire's foremost tactician, many who underestimate him pay the final price for their error. Fairly quickly Lohengram smashes all obstacles in his path to fulfilling his dream of uniting the stars - all save one, Yang Wen Li.
REVIEWER'S COMMENTS: A long time ago I was first introduced to the Legend of the Galactic Heroes by a friend. I can still remember his description of the series - epic battles is space with classical music playing in the background. With great skepticism I went to go see Cal Anime's showing of the series first few episodes, and I have grown to love the series since. In watching the series, I find the plot and storyline well put together. The story weaves its way toward an ending in good order, without the annoying filler episodes or irrelevant sidestories prevalent in the anime airing today. The animation quality is old school, nothing special about the art, acceptable, not even good. The screenplay is substandard, sometimes it drags. But what truly makes this series shine in my eyes is the duo of Yang wen Li and Reinhard von Lohengram. They splash off the screen and into your room. They simply define the series, a connect is established between the viewer and the pair. We see their struggles, their battles, their triumphs, and their defeats. We see them as human individuals with goals, dreams, and desires struggling to make their way through turbulent times. I noimate LoGH as the best least well known anime series out there waiting to be discovered.
A big thanks to Central Anime for subbing this series, and Yoshiki Tanaka for sharing with us his masterpiece.
